THE DAMAGE OF DEPRIVATION

Popular dairy-alternative brand Alpro, are celebrating Plant Power Day this month. The occasion glorifies the benefits of a plant-based diet, which is an admired lifestyle thanks to the photogenic qualities of fruits and veggies on Instagram.

The maintenance of ‘clean’ eating can lead to an obsessive attitude towards food, which was well known to Ffion McGowan. The personal trainer, mental health advocate and eating disorder survivor addresses how strict diets can easily implement our positivity:

“When you start cutting out food groups you are affecting your mental health by depriving yourself. Deprivation is the main cause of negative mental attitudes toward food.

“I became so obsessed with my diet that it led to an eating disorder, anxiety and depression. I remember crying one summer because I had left my lunch at home and couldn’t possibly eat something that I hadn’t prepared.”

Ffion has since reinvented her attitude towards nutrition, but stresses that everyday eating can be challenging. Customers are bombarded with ‘lighter’ options and can feel guilty for choosing products with higher calories. Ffion rages, “HAVING A SANDWICH IS FINE!”

Branding food as ‘unhealthy’ can create negative connotations in our mind. The focus should be on a balanced diet, stresses Ffion. Posting pictures of her varied diet on Instagram, both green salads and bowls of indulgent brownie and ice cream, Ffion has finally rekindled her relationship with food.
