Everyone has probably heard about the benefits of sex, whether it is beneficial for our physical health or our mental health, orgasms transform wellness as we know it.

A good orgasm should make you shiver from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Whether it is with a partner or alone, the benefits that come from reaching climax include lowering blood pressure, helping the immune system and orgasms can even help you sleep.

Orgasms can be reached by having sex with your partner but does not rule out if you are single. Sex and relationship engineer Colin Richards, 58, says “masturbation boosts your sexual confidence as the hormone released causes pleasure and relaxation.”

“People say laughter is the best medicine but honestly I truly believe that orgasms help more.”

Studies suggest being physically close can decrease stress levels as well.

Physical intimacy can trigger different chemicals in the brain including:

  • Endorphins: referred as the ‘love hormone’, fights our body’s stress and pain.

  • Oxytocin: referred as the ‘cuddle hormone’, triggers the feeling of compassion.

  • Dopamine: referred as the ‘behaviour hormone’, generally increases motivation.

Orgasms can also raise testosterone levels in both men and women, increasing our sex drive and creating a self-satisfying cycle of feel good hormones where the endorphins in our bodies can send us into deeply relaxed states, soothing out stresses and anxieties.

After an orgasm, the body releases prolactin, a hormone which leads to a general feel of relaxation and often drowsiness, which also prevents and tackles physical health problems like diabetes, migraines, ulcers and colds.

“When someone has an orgasm their body is flooded with hormones that makes them feeling fuzzy and warm, which a lot of people call ‘afterglow’,” says Colin.
