DAN'S STORY

11.03.2019

DANIEL O’Hare was a bright, popular young man that seemed to have so much to live for; he had a family that loved him, a large circle of friends and a great job lined up.

However, Dan’s story isn’t a positive one as at just 19-years-old and seemingly without warning, he took his own life.

To his family, the horror of what happened was made worse by the fact they had no idea he was ever suffering.

But through their grief, they realised more needed to be done to tackle the stigma around mental health.

They hoped to do something positive and established If You Care Share – a charity that works to support young people who are having thoughts of suicide.

Shirley Smith, Daniel’s mother and founder of IYCS, says their aim is to “prevent anyone feeling the pain we felt as a family when we lost Daniel”.

His lasting legacy has helped thousands of families through their suffering and proven that, as Shirley says, “talking really can save lives”.
